A Message from the President . . .

Top

Dear NAWBO SFBA Community,

Having returned from the NAWBO National Women’s Business Conference in Indianapolis, I was truly inspired by the collective strength and power of 500 women business owners.  It was indeed a powerhouse of successful women from all over the US in a variety of industries.  These amazing women had multi-million dollar construction companies, staffing firms, design companies.  They were retailers, manufacturers, printers – you name it! The money and power that these women represented was impressive – so much so that a presidential candidate came and made a keynote speech –no doubt, looking for women voters!

I was inspired by Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne of Georgetown Cupcakes. They left successful corporate jobs to pursue a baking dream.  Inspired by their Greek grandmother, they took risks, overcame fear, stayed true to their vision, maintained quality controls and gave back. Today, they are opening their 6th designer cupcake store. These brave women never gave up. We understand the determination, grit, and passion that drove them forward.

Unfortunately one of the biggest obstacles facing women business owners is accessing capital for business success. This is the inspiration for our upcoming October 17th half-day workshop, “Women, Business & Money: How to Get It, Grow It, and Keep It,” From 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m, you’ll learn how to reset your relationship with money and step-by-step processes to secure the finance necessary to profitable growth.  We hope to see you there; be prepared to learn, have fun and get a special goodie bag!

Our chapter continues to grow and thrive with new members and exciting programs.  Stayed tuned for a Prospective Member Luncheon for our facilitated peer-to-peer advisory group, Leaders Circle, for women owned companies with revenues of $2M+.

Lastly, I want to remind you that NAWBO is a proud national organization celebrating its 40th year.  Do you know the impact it has had on legislation enabling and supporting women-led businesses? I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events and having you part of the NAWBO San Francisco Bay Area Community.

Best wishes on your success,
Laura Russell-Jones
President, NAWBO SF Bay Area 2014-2015

PUBLIC POLICY UPDATE

Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families

On August 30, 2014, California Governor Edmund Brown signed into law the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 requiring employers to grant three days, or 24 hours, of paid sick leave to virtually all California employees, beginning on July 1, 2015.  This law makes California the second state in the nation (along with Connecticut) to require paid sick leave.

The new law applies to virtually all employers, regardless of size, and covers California employees of companies that have headquarters or offices in other states.  It also covers employees who work in California for 30 or more days in a year, as well as part-time and temporary employees.  There are several narrow categories of exempt employees. You should check with your HR and legal counsel to see if they apply to your business.

Covered employees will be entitled to take paid sick leave to address their own health condition,  that of a family member or to care for the adoptive parent, foster parent, stepparent or legal guardian of an employee or of the employee’s spouse or domestic partner.  Employees may also take paid sick leave if they are a victim of domestic assault, sexual violence or stalking.
If your company already provides paid time off, you will not need to provide additional time. However, you will want to make sure your existing policy meeting the requirements of the new law.

If you would like some additional ideas or advice, contact our public policy board member (and past president) Kay Robinson. (925) 284-5677
