The NAWBO San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is happy to announce that they have chosen the Alliance For Girls organization as their charitable cause for this fiscal year 2014-2015.
Says President of NAWBO-San Francisco Bay Area, Laura Russell-Jones, “As women business owners, we feel passionate about wanting "give back" by assisting organizations whose mission is compatible with ours. We support girls and young women; future business women. We have an obligation to help girls overcome social, emotional and systematic barriers so that they can become the next generation of strong, thoughtful and independent women. We want to help ensure that the girls continue to get the important services they need."
How NAWBO-SFBA is supporting Alliance For Girls:
Each month at the Educational Speaker Series dinner event, there will be an opportunity drawing. Many companies, such as PG&E and Bare Escentuals, have supported our initiative and generously offered gift baskets, Kindles, and Spa Packages. All proceeds will be donated to the Alliance For Girls to support two important initiatives: Alliance For Girls Video – a three-minute video that interviews girls and their champions about the power of collective impact. (See Link Below) The second intuitive is the Title IX Collaboration Project, which holds schools accountable for requiring that girls be treated equally in athletics and that students not be subjected to sexual harassment.
About The Alliance For Girls - Alliance for Girls (AFG) is an umbrella organization that represents over 60 Bay Area member organizations (such as Girls, Inc, Career Girls, Girls For Change, Girls on the Run, GirlVentures, Girls Leadership Institute, etc.) that serve over 90,000 girls. AFG has achieved large-scale social change for girls, and the people and organizations that serve them. Together with its membership, Alliance for Girls has successfully advocated for increased funds and improved funding mechanisms to support girls' services, enabled collaborations that expand girls' opportunities, and trained hundreds of leaders of girls' agencies. Our Mission – Alliance for Girls champions the leaders and organizations to empower and support Bay Area girls through advocacy, research, leadership development and connection. Why We Exist: Girls and the vibrant women they become are an economic and social force for good. These young leaders deserve a seat at every table. However, Bay Area girls are disproportionately affected by a number of challenges that can hold them back from reaching their full potential. Some of those challenges include a lack of physical activity, sexually transmitted diseases, rape and sexual harassment, eating disorders, depression, under-enrollment in science and technical education courses and single teen parenthood (Girls Report, San Francisco Department on the Status of Women). There are hundreds of organizations and leaders in the Bay Area working to reverse these trends. By leveraging our respective resources and common goals, we can ensure every girl has the support she needs to thrive.
