Letter from the President |

Dear NAWBO Sisters,
Wow! The energy of our Educational Speaker Series continues. The women at the September dinner were electrifying. It was wonderful to see new members, current members and guests all engaged in conversations about leadership; leadership struggles and leadership triumphs. I had several of the women who attended tell me it was the best ESS dinner ever. Sometimes all it takes is a simple topic to have an engaging discussion.
How do we continue to build on the energy and connections from the last three dinners? We need all of you to stay actively engaged.
I have heard from past members that they did not get anything from NAWBO so they left. The sad reality of it is that they did not attend any if but a couple of our programming events. In business, we cannot just sit on the sideline and hope that the big sale or contract will come through. We have to be constantly working, networking, and making connections in order to achieve success. The same goes for being a member of NAWBO-SFBA. In order gain the most from your membership you need to become actively engaged. What do I mean by actively engaged? Well you could start by going to an Educational Speaker Series Dinner or by attending one of our four Professional Development Forums. I encourage you to connect with the women and not just show up to say “I was present.” In business and in life, physical presence is not the absolute. We have to participate in conversations, discuss changes that affect us, and engage in change. There is no shortage of incredible and amazing women at all of our NAWBO-SFBA events. All of whom will likely become great friends once they are engaged.
If you are one of the many who tend to just show up physically, I invite you to join us again and re-engage. We are constantly looking for women to join our committees. Currently we are looking for women who want to do business with small and big businesses, women who want more visibility and women who are looking to make friends or find new referral partners. If you want any of these things, please reach out to me and we will help you achieve your goals. More likely than not, you will gain more value from joining a committee than you thought was possible.
I look forward to seeing you all on October 8th at the Educational Speaker Series. We will have a different set up so come ready to mingle and make connections!
In Service,
Emily

Embodied Leadership – Integrating Personal and Professional for Phenomenal Results
Women who run companies, create services and products, and transform business, political, educational, environmental and social landscapes are near mythical in their energy and abilities. And like all myths, there is a hyperbolic character to the stories of women’s success. And this hyperbole gives rise to daunting list of super-hero like must have qualities. Who can hear through the cacophony?
The good news is that all that we really need to be successful is to embody leadership. In this talk, you will learn about the practice of embodied leadership and how this grounded approach can help you achieve pleasurable and lasting success.

PUBLIC POLICY UPDATE |
|
Federal contracting officials now have the power to award sole-source contracts to women-owned businesses, a tool that should help the government finally achieve its goal of awarding 5% of its procurement dollars to women.
As an example of how this can benefit your business, Concord-based women-owned Hunter Hawk Inc. creates custom manufacturing, engineered vertical pumps and services to industries running 24/7 operations. In 2005, they bid a 5-year contract for specialty packaging to the DOD/ Redstone Army Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. Although they were not chosen in the first bid review, they received a call one year later asking if they could hold their original bid price for the remainder of the contact. Shortly afterwards, they were awarded years 2 – 5 of the $6 million contract.
Or consider this story: woman-owned Railroad Cleaners in Pittsburg is one of the preferred cleaning companies for the US Coast Guard in San Francisco. When they decided to expand their operations beyond their store location, they worked with Norcal- PTAC (free service provided through the SBDC) to create a SAM account for government contacting and obtain the preferred certifications. Soon after, they began getting emails from contracting officers. In the last two years, they have won eight Federal and State Contacts.
If your business would benefit from Government contracts, reach out to the local Norcal PTAC for additional resources.

Are you ready to grow your business but feel overwhelmed trying to do it yourself? Now, imagine 7 other women supporting your vision, encouraging your dreams and helping you brainstorm solutions to issues that were roadblocks to your success? And in return, you doing the same for them?
The power would be incredible. Or in the words of Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, “Success does not come without the cooperation of others.”
We’re excited to announce the formation of our year-long Success Circle Mastermind, beginning in January 2016. (replacing the Lean-In Program) It is one more way NAWBO-SFBA helps create success for our members.
The program will surround you with support and motivation to go to the next level. You receive (and give)

- Accountability around your goals and commitments
- A chance to expand your network among a small group of new confidants
In a safe and confidential environment of the mastermind, you’ll be able to share your struggles, celebrate your achievements and create a bond of camaraderie, support and encouragement not always found in everyday relationships.
