November 2015 | Monthly Newsletter for the NAWBO San Francisco Bay Area Chapter

President’s Message:

Emily_WirowekDear NAWBO Members and Supporters of Women Business Owners,

Recently Shannon Presson our President-Elect and VP of Programs, Ranjani Mohana our VP of Corporate Partner Relations and I attended the NAWBO National Women’s Business Conference. This is one of the best benefits of being a member of this wonderful organization. We found inspiration, business connections, business resources and services that we needed for ourselves, our businesses and our chapter. One of the most impactful things was listening to 20+ past National Presidents share the benefit that NAWBO has created for future generations.

NAWBO has been transforming public policy for the last 40 years. NAWBO gave rise to many organizations supporting women such as WIPP, WPO, NWBC, Committee 200, WBENC and NWBOC. Before NAWBO, women could not get a credit card in her own name or get a business loan without having a man co-sign. They achieved so much and we stand on their shoulders and continue to strive for more gender balanced leadership.

Conference presenters spoke about how women in business are great leaders in their personal life, social spheres and political spheres. It confirmed for me that NAWBO is the organization that empowers, educates and encourages women to become the best leaders they can be. We do that by supporting them with our community of like-minded women. We advocate for them to be at the tables they want to sit at. We inspire them to dream bigger and believe that they can do something that is bigger than them. NAWBO creates a space where all can create, innovate and be effective. The first step is joining NAWBO and becoming engaged in the conversation.

I want to remind you that joining a committee is one of the best ways to grow your leadership skills and your business. Since the last newsletter we have had some amazing women join us as Membership Ambassadors. I want to thank Tina Greenbaum, Dina Lynch Eisenberg, and Stephanie Searle for wanting more from their membership and stepping up. These amazing women are leaders in their industries and are now leaders on behalf of all of you. Please reach out to them or me so we can learn about your goals for joining NAWBO-SFBA and help you realize them. Together we can all achieve our goals..

Don’t forget to register to join us on November 12th to engage with two top notch women leaders from the San Francisco Giants and Oakland As. We will learn about what being a woman leader looks and feels like in a very male-dominated industry.

In Service,

Emily

It's Time to Play Ball: Women in Sports

If there is one thing successful women business owners understand, it is that without passion for the game, it is a lot harder to stay to stay IN the game. While you bring all your skills, determination and grit into play, the secret sauce is that you love what you do. The success you have is validation you are doing it well.

The November Educational Speakers Series focuses on Women in Sports. We have invited some top Bay Area women who have enjoyed great success working in this heavily male-dominated field to share their personal journey to excellence.

Join us for a lively discussion and hear some insider scoop on what inspires them, challenges them and keeps them at the top of their game.

Public Policy

Early this month, the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship unanimously approved the Women’s Small Business Ownership Act of 2015, which reauthorizes the Women’s Business Center (WBC) program. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chair David Vitter (R-LA) and Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) sponsored this landmark legislation and the bill  passed on a bipartisan, unanimous vote - a rare occurrence in Congress as of late.

Women entrepreneurs receive business training and counseling from more than 100 Women Business Centers (WBCs) throughout the country. Because of this bill, the WBC program will now be authorized $21.75M through FY2020, adding more Centers and providing additional support to existing Centers. WBCs can now receive grants up to $250,000, nearly double the previous maximum of $150,000. Funds above the $250,000 level will be made available to Centers that meet goals and wish to establish new projects. These updated funding levels will encourage growth in established Centers and allow WBCs to provide additional support to women entrepreneurs. The Act also requires important updates to the Women Business Center program.

Women’s Business Centers provide an invaluable resource for women entrepreneurs. Ten million women-owned businesses contribute to the nation’s economy by generating $1.6 trillion in revenue and employing nearly 9 million Americans. WBCs are an important partner for these 10 million women-owned businesses and this legislation will enhance their capabilities and build on their successes.
