NAWBO News & Events

December 2015 | Monthly Newsletter for the NAWBO San Francisco Bay Area Chapter

President’s Message:

Emily_WirowekDear NAWBO Members and Supporters of Women Business Owners,

As we approach the holiday season I would like to pause and reflect on what we have to be grateful for at NAWBO-SFBA. We are genuinely thankful for our members, our corporate partners, and our community partners. Each one of you helps our organization be stronger and more influential in our region. Thank you to Bank of America and Wells Fargo for being steadfast supporters of NAWBO-SFBA and for continually engaging with our members and supporting dynamic programs. Thank you to PG & E and GoDaddy for supporting the education of women business owners. Thank you to SocializeLA, AlicebyDesign and Stage2 Marketing, because without all of you our brand and our marketing tools would not engage as many individuals as they do.

While we take different paths in life and have diverse backgrounds, we all support the need to educate, empower and advocate for more women leaders. NAWBO-SFBA represents women entrepreneurs who desire to have a positive impact on the lives they touch and use our collective voice to make a real difference in changing the landscape for women business owners in our Greater Bay Area. We know that if we change the landscape for women, we will change the economic, social and political spheres in which we live. We know that if we focus on changing workplace culture we can create an environment that fosters more women to get on boards and more women to stay in the workforce. This seemingly simple change will transform the local economy.

At NAWBO-SFBA, we believe that we are stronger together and stand unified to create leaders for a world of change. I hope that you will join us in the coming months and become a part of our community of brilliant, professional, and thoughtful leaders. These men and women are striving to make tomorrow a better day for the generations to come. We are educating, inspiring, empowering and advocating for the leaders of the future.

Please join me on December 10th to enjoy a light-hearted conversation around stress during the holidays. We all have it, so how can we be mindful of the stress in our personal life and business life so that we and everyone around us enjoys the holidays.

In Service,

Emily

It’s the Holidays... Don’t Take it So Seriously!

As entrepreneurs, we tend to stress out when the rest of the world is making merry. But we also know the more frazzled we are, the less we embody the values of our business. And, the less people want what we have to offer.

Taking ourselves, our businesses, and the holidays a little less seriously can be the way out of that spiral. When we joke and laugh about what’s on our plate, we create spaciousness, delight, and room for opportunity.

Join us and comedian Alicia Dattner as she shows you how to keep your sanity over the holidays as well as do the same with your clients.

In this interactive, fun and funny evening, you will:

  • Receive 3 comedy tools anyone can use to help gracefully shift out of stress and into ease
  • Get a chance to have Alicia answer your burning questions on humor as it relates to your own business
  • Laugh. A lot!

Public Policy

Landmark Women’s Business Center Legislation Introduced in the House

Before departing for the Thanksgiving recess, Representative Suzan DelBene (D-WA) introduced the Women’s Small Business Ownership Act of 2015, which reauthorizes the Women’s Business Center (WBC) program. This bill mirrors legislation passed by the Senate Small Business Committee earlier this year.

Women entrepreneurs receive business training and counseling from more than 100 WBCs throughout the country. The bill, if passed, would authorize the program at $21.75M through FY2020. This could add more Centers and provide additional support to existing Centers. WBCs could also receive grants up to $250,000; nearly double the previous maximum of $150,000. Additional funds above the maximum will be made available to Centers that meet goals and wish to establish new projects. If passed, these updated funding levels will encourage growth in established Centers and allow WBCs to provide additional support to women entrepreneurs.

Women’s Business Centers provide an invaluable resource for women entrepreneurs. Ten million women-owned businesses contribute to the nation’s economy by generating $1.6 trillion in revenue and employing nearly 9 million Americans. WBCs are an important partner for these 10 million women-owned businesses and this legislation will enhance their capabilities and build on their successes.

Call or email your House Representative today to let them know that you support this bill.
