March Message from the President

Kathleen Thurmond

Women supporting women, isn’t that what we’re all about?  I am constantly delighted at the support I’ve received and see others receive as I attend NAWBO and other women’s events.  I attended a meeting today where the topic was partially about being a role model/mentor for younger women and each other.  Then I attended a law school class as a visitor with a woman teaching Criminal Law.  Not only was she a funny and well informed/smart professor but she was also a pioneer among women lawyers, entering at a time when very few were in the field.  There was no one to mentor her while she was a law student and now she is a role model and giving back as a professor while encouraging other women to pursue a career in law.  I also met several women at the NAWBO breakfasts excited about each other’s goals and encouraging each other to reach a higher level or go for that impossible customer.  I love seeing women giving back to other women because that’s our vision at NAWBO.  We strive to empower women as leaders to influence a new and more positive culture of business.

Jessica Herrin, CEO of Stella & Dot is one such woman.  She will be speaking April 11 as part of our Educational Speaker Series.  Stella & Dot is the SF-based 500-Fastest Growing Company that sells boutique-style jewelry and accessories.  Ms. Herrin will talk about how she grew into a $100-million Dollar Success Story.  She admits that Stella & Dot was created to give every woman the means to style her own life. Not only feel beautiful with accessories – but also feel bold and empowered to be their own boss with their flexible entrepreneurship platform and run their own business. Jessica refers to it as “The Happiness Business.”  As an example and through her company she provides opportunities for women interested in entrepreneurship but not sure where to begin.  Please join us at the Sir Francis Drake, 450 Powell St., SF,   April 11 from 5:30 – 8:00 to hear her incredible story, network with each other and shop for beautiful, affordable jewelry.

As Maya Angelou states, “how important it is to celebrate our heroes and she-roes”.  We are here to celebrate you, support you, learn from you and continue to evolve into a welcoming organization you are excited about participating with as you grow your business and your leadership.  Come join us, become a member for a $50 discount until the end of April and be part of our collective voice for women in business in the Bay area.

Warm regards,

Kathleen Thurmond
