June Message from the President

Kathleen Thurmond

My term as president of NAWBO-SFBA is coming to a close, so I want to say goodbye and, once again, thank the incredible NAWBO Board and breakfast facilitators for all of their support and perseverance in working towards continuous growth and change. I am also grateful for our members and the awesome women who have attended our breakfasts and dinners and filled out our surveys. I value your presence, energy, and fresh ideas. I look forward to continuing on the Board in my new role as past-president.

This has been an amazing month during which I have attended a number of women’s business events where I noticed a common thread and surge in focusing on women’s empowerment and an evolving, updated feminism. At the Professional Business Women’s Conference where NAWBO had a table, Jackie Speier said “every time you lose, you win because it positions you for the next thing.” That’s important for us to remember because losing is often equated with failing and yet “failure” is about life’s lessons that teach us to expand our minds and think differently. In this process something new can be created. She went on to suggest that we must “be willing to face the impossible, face our fears and when someone puts up a wall, walk around it.” Powerful messages for life and for women entrepreneurs.

Sheryl Sandberg reminds us that when we hear someone call our daughters “bossy” we need to say, “she is developing executive leadership skills.” Women are often labeled as aggressive while the same behavior in men is admired. She goes on to say that we need to own our success and support one another and acknowledge the women who have helped us and reach out for the women behind us. Both Speier and Sandburg agree that friendships with other women are vital to our success and growth--networking is key but friendships are essential. We all need to speak out and work together to create a more equal world.

Laurel Bellows, current American Bar Association President, is focused on eliminating human sex trafficking that enslaves over 100,000 US citizens and has developed tools to help us identify the crime. She is also focused on enforcing existing laws for pay equity. Women still only make 77 cents on the dollar but African American women make less at 60 and Latina women at 55. Even in the legal profession with all things being equal, women equity partners earn 89 cents on the dollar. This is unacceptable and we need to continue to call this out and demand comparable pay for comparable work. It’s critical that we stop leaving a minimum of $700,000 on the table in our lifetime. When women make less, families, business and our economy suffer. Women entrepreneurs are helping to turn the tide in terms of pay equity.

Lynne Twist, author of “The Soul of Money.” will be our speaker on June 13, 2013. As co-founder of the Pachamama Alliance, indigenous women in Peru were given a “seat at the table.” Please join us for a “life-changing” evening of inspiration, fun, and connection as Ms. Twist guides us in transforming our relationship with money.

Warm regards,

Kathleen Thurmond

June 25 - Conscious Choices -- Big Success
How awake and aware are you in your business and life?

Sometimes it feels like life takes us on a whirlwind journey and sometimes we feel on top of our game. What are the ups and downs of life really here to teach us? Do we really have a say or does life, our emotions and circumstances direct us? How can we consistently achieve the success and fulfillment we truly desire as we ride the wave of life?

Join Maureen Simon, author of the international bestselling book- "Awakening The Essential Feminine: Claiming Your Influential Power", as she supports you to answer these questions for your life and business. Maureen is the founder and creative director of The Essential Feminine Company and works with thousands of women a year through her company's online empowerment courses. She is just returning from a 9 month sabbatical and has personally completed a process where she personally addressed these questions on an inner quest in the Rocky Mountains. Maureen will get you thinking about where you are making conscious choices in your life today and where you are or need to be more awake and aware to achieve greater success and fulfillment. Join us for this thought provoking talk.
