A Message from the President....

Kay RobinsonWe are more than our businesses. We are leaders in our families, businesses, and communities. The tagline for NAWBO is Grow, Thrive, Lead. Being a leader is important to our success. At the national convention in Miami, the chapter presidents heard from Joseph Iarocci, CEO of the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership. Joe introduced us to servant leadership, which resonated with most of us. NAWBO is a servant leader organization. Joe identified his favorite servant leader organizations, including NAWBO, Southwest Airlines, Harvard Business Review and others.

NAWBO SFBA often meets with delegations of women business owners and leaders from other countries through a state department program, International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).The most common topic of discussion is leadership. How do American women demonstrate leadership in their businesses, in their communities, and their country? If you are interested in joining us on one of these diplomatic meetings, please let me know. They will ask you about how you see yourself as a woman leader.

On October 15th  several board members attended the Bay Area Bar Association luncheon held for women attorneys on How Women become Corporate Leaders the Unwritten Rule, featuring NAWBO CA board member Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire. How do women get on corporate boards? With the new Senate Concurrent Resolution 62 setting standards for the number of women on corporate boards in California, this is an exciting time for women to take on new leadership roles.

At our November Educational Speaker Series (ESS), Kate Purmal challenged us to have a bigger vision, to take bold steps, and to change our thinking about where we see ourselves. It is fair to say we all left considering new possibilities.

Before this message ends, I want to remember this is the 50th anniversary of H.R. 5050, the legislation sponsored by NAWBO that gave recognition to women business owners. H.R. 5050 included the following:

  • Assured that banks gave us loans on our own signature
  • Created women business centers nationwide
  • Established the National Women’s Business Council
  • Directed the Census Bureau to collect data on women business owners for the first time

All these changes happened in 1988—not that long ago.

Women at the ESS dinner discussed where we are now and found there is still gender bias. A few of the comments from this discussion:

  • One woman experienced not being hired because she was female.
  • Companies need to recognize the role of women in their families and develop practices to support them.
  • Companies should take advantage of the collaborative nature of women.
  • Women are creating new types of businesses (i.e., bloggers) that need to be valued along with more traditional businesses  (brick & mortar).

This month we are changing our format from a sit-down dinner to one conducive to networking as Susan RoAne, an expert in networking, takes us through some activities that will result in more connections, build more relationships, and show you how to be seen in a crowd. Don’t be shy. Join us on December 12th, 2013.

Best wishes on your success,

Kay

Kay Robinson
President, NAWBO SFBA

Partnership Programs

NAWBO SF Bay Area & Kiva Zip

Expanding Financial Access to Women Entrepreneurs

Kiva is a non-profit based in San Francisco that helps entrepreneurs crowdfund the capital they need to start and grow their business. Since launching in 2005, over 1 million lenders have crowd-funded over $490 million in loans to people in 73 different countries. Their work is focused in the developing world, but recently Kiva launched a pilot in the United States called Kiva Zip.
Kiva Zip supports entrepreneurs in the US who could benefit from a 0% interest loan up to $5,000. This program aims to support social entrepreneurship and address financial exclusion that many small businesses face in the United States. Through the Kiva Zip website, people from all over the world can lend directly to borrowers in shares as small as $25.

Meet Jodie Israel of JMI Accounting

By Melody Brumis of Write on Time Solutions

Jodi IsraelThis month, I’d like to introduce you to Jodie Israel, owner of JMI Accounting in Moraga. Jodie has an MBA in accounting and has been working in the financial world for over 30 years. “One day I just decided to go out on my own,” Jodie said, and that was over seven years ago. She provides accounting, bookkeeping, and business consulting services to startups, sole proprietors, mid-sized corporations, and high net-worth individuals.

“What I like best about my business,” Jodie said, “is helping my clients succeed.” She helps them understand their business financials—where they are, and where they are going. Recently, Jodie helped one client turn the financial end of her business around, and now it’s on solid ground. Jodie shared this financial tip: “Create a budget for your business, and work within it!”

Jodie attributes her success to her professionalism and a strong track record. “My clients succeed,” Jodie continued, “because I help them to organize their financials.” Up to 95% of Jodie’s business is through personal referrals, some of which have been through NAWBO. “I’ve been co-facilitator for the Oakland Networking Breakfast Forum for the last 1 ½ to 2 years, but who’s counting,” Jodie laughed. Jodie likes networking at the forum and the speaker’s presentations.

When not working, Jodie enjoys working with yarn. She knits sweaters and crochets blankets, which she donates to Children’s Hospital Oakland. Jodie is a big reader, and her last favorite book was Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. You can meet Jodie the first Thursday of every month at the Networking Breakfast Forum – Oakland. Or, learn more about JMI Accounting by visiting her website, emailing Jodie, or calling her at 925-320-7076.

Public Policy

It Is Time - The Affordable Care Act

While the Affordable Care Act has hit some bumps getting off the ground it is on its way.  Americans who were previously uninsurable are signing up for coverage, required benefits for women and children have been expanded,  those with preexisting conditions can no longer be denied.  The media, of course, has been having a field day bashing the process and conservatives continue to impede it wherever they can, but the potential positive impact cannot be denied.
There is a benefit from an equitable health care system that will assure all Americans are cared for.  Here are some links to stay informed on the issues.
