Dear NAWBO SFBA Community,
Nine members of the NAWBO San Francisco Bay Area (NAWBO SFBA) Chapter attended "Propel Your Business" Conference in Sacramento, CA, hosted annually by NAWBO California (NAWBO CA). One of our Board Members, Julie Gordon White, brought each of us a flower for our name tags, which helped NAWBO SFBA be remembered amongst all the California NAWBO Chapters. Thank you, Julie, for helping NAWBO SFBA stand out with flowers on our name tags; not in our hair.

During Propel Your Business, there was an opportunity to speak about the NAWBO SFBA Chapter that consists of approximately 120 members from eight counties – San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, Sonoma, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano and Napa Counties. Our Chapter's region has about 154,000 women-owned businesses. NAWBO SFBA speaks on behalf of all these women-owned businesses and seeks ways to inform them about current news and public policy.

We met with Assemblywoman, Joan Buchanan, on issues that matter to women business owners and also spoke with Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner. Three issues were brought to their attention on behalf of women business owners: 1) access to capital, 2) fairness in procurement and 3) impact of regulations on small businesses. Assemblywoman Buchanan was especially interested in issues relating to procurement and Assemblywoman Skinner expressed interest in access to capital.

Left to Right: Kay Robinson, Kim Miller-Hershon, May Pon, Laura Russell-Jones, Emily Wirowek, Marta Rue, Deb Doyl, Julie Gordon-White

NAWBO SFBA encourages you to meet with your Legislators also. Inform them about NAWBO and the issues you experience in your business. Rest assured, your experiences are the same as or similar to many women business owners - A single voice becomes the voice for us all.

The Obama administration directed all federal departments to review regulations for their impact on small businesses. As a representative for NAWBO, I attended a meeting held by The Office of the Ombudsman to reach out and identify regulations that impact small businesses. If your business has been unfairly impacted by a federal regulation you can seek relief through the Office of the Ombusman – visit the web site

Our next Educational Speaker Series & Dinner happens on Thursday, April 10th, a monthly event you don't want to miss. Deborah Merrill-Sands, Dean of the Lorry I. Lokey Graduate School of Business at Mills College will be speaking on “Women and Leadership: What does gender have to do with it?”

On behalf of the NAWBO SFBA Board of Directors, we look forward to seeing you on April 10th!

Best wishes,
Kay Robinson
President, NAWBO SFBA

Women and Leadership
What does gender have to do with it?
As women business owners, we know the importance of increasing our roles as women leaders in all areas of society from business to politics to corporations. Women have begun to step-up and step-in to leadership positions on corporate boards, and executive positions, legislative circles and academia, yet we still see ourselves highly under-represented in these areas. How do we change this? Imagine more women in leadership – what would this mean for your business?

Dean Merrill-Sands shares what's needed to continue to forge beyond the barriers to leverage your power, principled leadership as well as your essential and unique contributions for the health of your business, and in turn, our economy and our communities -- How would you step into new levels of leadership that positively impacts your life, your business and your community? Join us to learn how this is done!

About Deborah Merrill-Sands
Deborah Merrill-Sands is Dean of the Lorry I. Lokey Graduate School of Business at Mills College in Oakland, one of the most well-known socially responsible business schools in the Bay Area. She previously served as the Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Center for Gender in Organizations as well as Associate Dean and the Dean of the School of Management at Simmons College in Boston, MA. Additionally, Dean Merrill-Sands also holds a doctorate in Anthropology from Cornell University.

FEATURED MEMBER . . .

Interview with Ann Lyons of Melons Catering
By Deb Doyle, Brand Storyteller, Stage2 Marketing

Ann Lyons has been using her inventiveness and tenacity to create some of the Bay Area’s most memorable events for more than 30 years.  Melons Catering has produced formal events like the farewell dinner for Conductor Kurt Adler on the San Francisco Opera stage, unusual events, like parties on Alcatraz and even the most intimate dinner for 4 at the Point Bonita Lighthouse. “New clients come for the food,” says Ann. “They come back for the experience.”

Melons Catering grew from her first event & catering company, which dissolved when the two female partners were unable to get financial backing “It’s hard when you are a small business and a female. Banks don’t want to lend you money. The hardest thing is not having enough money to make it all happen.”
Since launching Melons Catering, the business has weathered many storms:  the earthquake, 9/11 and the dot.com crash, as well as the usual trials of running a small business. Ann credits her success to continuing to believe in herself, sticking with it and keeping her ear to the ground. She understands that when times are tough, you need to just put your head down and do the job.

Right after 9/11, a fellow business owner told her the Small Business Administration (SBA) was making emergency loans. She applied the moment she heard about it and got her application in just under the deadline. Not only did the SBA grant her an emergency $50k loan, they sent her a letter telling her they thought she needed more. They conducted a full audit and granted her an additional $200k.

Since then, Melons Catering has purchased 2 buildings in South San Francisco where they, create their memorable events for both private clients and corporate clients like Google and Anchor Brewing. Their Callan street location includes a dining room where clients can sample meals ahead of time. A dinner in the Melons dining room is a very popular item at local charity events.

The best part of Ann’s job is seeing the smiles and the instant gratification of guests at a memorable event. Ann remembers one wedding Melons created on East Brothers Island. The guests arrived by boat on a misty day. Just as the wedding party arrived, the fog began to lift. A little boy began jumping and clapping for joy that the sun was coming out. “We put the ingredients into the event, but the people bring the magic. I loved watching them have a good time.”

Ann joined NAWBO about two years ago to expand her network of women in other industries. While she has not been able to attend many of the dinners due to event conflicts, she values the membership and looks forward to meeting more women business owners.

If you‘d like to learn more about Ann, or book your next event with Melons Catering, connect by phone at 650.583.1756 or by email

PUBLIC POLICY: LOCAL, STATE, NATIONAL . . .

How far have women come economically?
By Deborah Lardie, Public Policy Chair, NAWBO SFBA

In pondering International Women’s Day this year I was reminded of the line from a 1960’s commercial for cigarettes- “you’ve come a long way, baby”.   Compared to a few decades ago that is true but economically women still have a way to go.  While statistics show gender wage differences on many different levels not favoring women, the picture for women owned businesses is more optimistic. The number of women-ownedfirms increased by 59% since 1997 and the Ford Motor Company recently announced it increased its sourcing with Women's Business Enterprise companies 50 percent last year.

Another area that is improving, although slowly, is procurement. In 2012, only 4.00% of all government contracts were awarded to women-owned businesses – an increase from 2011, even though federal law mandates a 5% government-wide procurement goal for women-owned small businesses. The organization Women in Public Policy advocates on behalf of, and reports on legislation for increasing government business with women-owned businesses. Only through legislation is real change going to happen, and it is time for some rapid change on all economic levels for women. We have come a long way but not far enough to stop working for more and celebrating our accomplishments.
